Suk-San Wan Songkran is the Thai expression for Happy Songkran. This is the Thai New Year, celebrated the 13-15 of April every year, and marks the start of the year 2455 in the Buddhist calendar. It is also the hottest part of the year, which is probably why most of the activities are centered around water. This is the time of the year where in celebration, people engage in large public gatherings of throwing and spraying water on each other. It is probably the biggest celebration time in Thailand.
The Police even set road accident targets, as it is also a time in all of the celebrations, where there are many road accidents. From previous experience this would be due to the fact that alcohol consumption is increased and while driving along, at any point you are likely to have water thrown on you or be found in the hail of water pistols and cannons. Sometimes the water is warm, and other times they have set large blocks of ice, so when it hits you, it is a shocking jolt of cold. It is also challenging for me to be able to take photographs of the events, because cameras and water are not a good mix! So for the next few days I will be at various activities and prepare a blog post on the actual Songkran festivities from Phuket town and Patong beach.
